Saturday 15th June 2019

SWCGA Championship Week Matchplay Day 4 Cornwall v Somerset Parkstone GC

Cornwall produced another strong performance on Day 4 of the SWCGA Championship Matchplay Shield encounters by convincingly beating Strokeplay Champions Somerset 9.75 - 4.25.

The morning singles brought four wins and a half for the Duchy. The singles winners were Matt Richards (6&5), George Leigh (3&1), Joe Reynard (3&2) and Josh Greenaway (4&3) whilst Rob MacGregor halved.

Leading 4.5 - 3.5 at lunch there was still a lot to do but Captain Ian Veale was eventually able to relax as in a tight series of foursomes the Duchy came out on top and undefeated in any of them with 3 wins and a half. Foursomes are proving to be a strong point for the team as Richards and Reynard halved at the top of the order. Following them there were wins for  Leigh and Richard Jasper (2&1), Aaron Stephens & Greenaway (2&1), and Conor Wilson & MacGregor (3&2).

Other Day 4 match results; Gloucestershire 10 - 4 Wiltshire and Dorset 8.25 - 5.75 Devon.

This all adds up to two counties having the chance to win the Matchplay Shield on the last day (Friday). Unbeaten Dorset will be hoping to win their first title for some 40 odd years whilst Gloucestershire will be looking for a favour from the Duchy who face the afore-mentioned Dorset. Gloucestershire take on Devon and will be favourites in that match whilst a win for Dorset over Cornwall would see them lift the title.
