Duchy Disappointment in Defeat to Wiltshire

Monday 10th June 2019

SWCGA Championship Week Matchplay Day 2 Cornwall v Wiltshire Parkstone GC

Cornwall suffered an agonisingly disappointing half point defeat to Wiltshire on day two of SW Week at Parkstone today.

Despite leading 4.5 - 3.5 after the morning singles and needing just two wins from the four afternoon foursomes Cornwall manged just one win and a halved match.

In the singles there were wins for Matt Richards (1 up), Joe Reynard (2&1), Aaron Stephens (5&4) and Kieran Faulkner (1 up) with a half from George Leigh. With those results in the bag, and yesterday's foursomes performance, hopes were high of closing out the match. It was not to be though as in increasingly wet conditions lead pair Leigh and Richard Jasper went down by the one hole. In the second foursome Josh Greenaway and Kieran Faulkner lost 3&2 and the pressure was on. Richards and Reynard won 3&2 and then it was all down to the final match. Conor Wilson and Rob MacGregor were one down through 13 and fighting hard for the cause. Despite their best efforts the half they managed to achieve was not enough  and the Duchy were beaten. The final result Cornwall 6.75 - 7.25 Wiltshire.

Other Day 2 results saw Dorset remain unbeaten as they despatched Gloucestershire 8- 6 and Devon beat Somerset 7.25 - 6.75

Tuesday sees the 36 hole strokeplay qualifier for the English County Finals with tee times from 0750. All 10 Cornish team members will compete with 6 nominated players scores to count.
