Further Disappointment for Duchy at SW Week

The Cornwall Men's team (above) were subjected to a gut wrenching defeat on day 2 of SW Week at Cumberwell Park GC yesterday when they suffered a second successive defeat 7.5 - 6.5 at the hands of a never say die Gloucestershire team.

The morning singles saw the Gloucestershire team take a 4.5 - 3.5 lead at lunch. Cornwall's top order manged just the one half point (Harry Hall against Jake Phillips) but the lower half delivered three wins for Richard Jasper (1 up), Conor Wilson (2&1) and Matt Richards (3&2).

Through most of the afternoon it looked good for the Duchy and a win was most definitely achievable but with holes running out the dogged Gloucestershire team pegged Cornwall back and ultimately snatched a win. Hall playing with Rob MacGregor stared the ball rolling with a handsome 5&4 win over Alex Ireland and Nick Day and when Joe Cruse and Richards won 3 &2 over Dan Sheehan and Jack Cope just a further half was required. The gloucestershire fightback gained momentum as Jack Irwin and Sandy Kirton were beaten at the last and the same hole saw Aaron Stephens and Joe Reynard go down by 2 holes after they had been in the driving seat for the majority of the round.

The result leaves Cornwall in 4th place in the 6 County table above Devon and Dorset both of whom have also lost their first two matches.

Today the 36 hole SW Championship strokeplay qualifier takes place with Cornwall hoping for a morale boosting performance.
