West Cornwall are 2018 Team Champions

West Cornwall GC's top team - pictured above - ensured they came away from three winter knockout finals with the big prize yesterday as they comfortably overcame Perranporth in the final of the Cornwall Team Championship at Bude & N Cornwall GC. The team's West Cornwall clubmates were beaten in the Frank Wills Salver final a fortnight earlier and, also yesterday, the club's President's Trophy Final team were beaten at the same venue. All of this meant there was an added incentive and motivation for the 9 men.

They set about their opponents from the off and their winning margin of 9.25 - 3.5 was set up in the morning foursomes. The Lelant based club took charge of proceedings winning three of the foursomes games and taking the oft important 9th man's 3/4 point. Needing just three wins from the 8 afternoon singles West Cornwall strolled over the finish line with consummate ease leaving Perranporth still waiting for their first ever final win in the competitions 65 year history.

The two teams arrived at Bude to a (recently) rare sunny day, clear blue skies, little wind and a course presented in excellent condition by the host club.

Whilst the morning foursomes generally went the way of West Cornwall the matches were inevitably closer than the 3-1 lunchtime score suggests. Former County Champion Jon Coleman and Alex Glasson beat the county pairing of Conor Wilson and Chris Fleming by the odd hole and the same winning margin was achieved by Phil Weaver and Dean Tulley over Chris Llewelyn and Simon Knowles. Tulley holed the pairs second shot from some 150 yards at the par 4 5th hole for eagle - a feat he almost repeated in the afternoon at the 7th. Matt Richards and Seamus Stevens got West Cornwall's 3rd point beating Adam Taylor and George Law 2&1. The only foursomes win for Perranporth came from Sandy Kirton and Chris Johnston as they beat Luke Stevens and Jason Hackett by 2 holes.

The 9th man contest was tight and a full round could not determine a winner but West Cornwall’s Jordan Musitano eventually got the better of Tom Benney at the 1st extra hole.

West Cornwall were now firmly in the driving seat and as the afternoon singles progressed there was an inevitability about the final result with Perranporth unable to stem the tide of matches going against them. In the end West Cornwall claimed 5.5 points from the available 8 and emphatically won the match.

Jon Coleman (above) was having a good day and went on to beat Conor Wilson 4&3, whilst Matt Richards overcame Chris Johnston 5&4. Alex Glasson beat Chris Llewelyn 4&3, Luke Stevens beat Adam Taylor 2&1 and Dean Tulley beat George Law 3&2. For West Cornwall Seamus Stevens endured to gain a half point against Simon Knowles. The wins for Perranporth came from Sandy Kirton (below) who beat Jason Hackett by 2 holes and Chris Fleming who beat Phil Weaver by the same margin.

All those present were first welcomed by Bude Captain Dave Simmons. Both Captains Paul Jenks (Perranporth)and  Richard Glasson (West Cornwall), thanked Bude & N Cornwall GC for the condition of the course, the hospitality and the catering as well as thanking the Cornwall Golf Union for staging the winter knockout programme. Before presenting the prizes CGU President Mike Ellis congratulated both teams on reaching the final, an achievement in itself. He especially thanked Bude for their help and cooperation following the disruption caused by the mid March snowfall. Particular mention was made of Charlotte Britton  and also James Leitch, the clubs Greenkeeper and his team. Ellis was pleased to report to the audience  the fact some 850 plus golfers had taken part in the four winter knockout competitions, a testament to their ongoing popularity.
