Harry Gets Palmer Cup Nod

West Cornwall and Cornwall County Team member Harry Hall’s good start to the year has been rewarded with a second consecutive selection for the annual Palmer Cup competition in which the United States take on Europe. This year’s event will take place for the first time outside of America at the famous Evian Resort Golf Club in France from 6-8 July 2018.

The teams for the event were announced in the middle of the week and Hall, currently studying at the University of Nevada and Las Vegas, was a committee selection for the 12 man team. In a twist to this year’s encounter Hall’s UNLV team mate Shintaro Ban, will represent the American team.

In what is also a first a team of women have also been selected to represent the two sides who will play mixed fourballs, mixed foursomes and singles against each other over the 3 competition. The United States are the holders of the Palmer Cup having won the 2017 fixture.

The history behind the annual event is that in 1997 the late Arnold Palmer was approached by the Golf Coaches Association of America regarding lending his name to an international collegiate event between the United States and Great Britain and Ireland. The Ryder Cup-style format brought together initially the top eight collegiate players in the United States against their counterparts from GB&I and more latterly (2002) against a European team. With Palmer’s blessing and the support of the Arnold Palmer Golf Company, the inaugural event was played at his own Bay Hill Club in Florida in June 1997. This week of course the PGA Tour event is being staged there as we write.

The list of names of those who have represented both sides in previous events reads like a Who’s Who in golf with the likes of U.S. Open Champions Dustin Johnson, Graeme McDowell, Lucas Glover and Webb Simpson, Open Champion Ben Curtis, PGA Champion Justin Thomas, Patrick Cantlay, Kevin Chappell, Bryson DeChambeau, Luke Donald, Paul Dunne, Rickie Fowler, Bill Haas, Matt Kuchar, Alex Norén, Ryan Moore, Jon Rahm, and Brandt Snedeker included.
