'Royal' Radnor, as they are affectionately known around the county, clinched the CGU Summer Handicap League title on home ground on Saturday when they defeated challengers St Kew 4.5 - 2.5 in what was a winner take all encounter. In the last game to be completed this year both sides were in a position to win the league but for Radnor the home advantage clearly paid off.
Father and son duo Mike and Piran Kent got the home side off to a good start as both won their singles. Mike convincingly defeated St Kew's Jake Sanders 8&6 before Piran completed a 3&2 win over Andy Jones. Radnor claimed a third point when Tony Friday playing at number 5 beat Paul Hunt 6&5. Elsewhere though the matches were a much tighter affair.
St Kew kept themselves in the picture when Scott Chandler beat Jason Buckley by the odd hole and Dave Harrison beat Paul Riddle 3&2, Radnor claimed a half in the match between their proprietor Jon Barber and Nolan Oatley and with a superior game point difference from their early season matches knew they could not be overhauled. Nevertheless the final drama was to come as match 4 between Radnor's Nick Rees and St Kew's Andy Pascoe had finished all square through 18.
Playing the 19th hole Rees holed a 25 footer for a birdie 2 to win his match with Pascoe and to seal victory for Radnor.
