Falmouth's Robs Claim Lord Lieutenants

Falmouth GC’s two Robs, Eccleston and Brown, yesterday won the CGU Lord Lieutenant’s Trophy at Looe GC, where they combined to amass 43 stableford points in the pairs betterball competition. This gave them top spot in a field of 84 players.

This annual event is staged by the CGU to support the work of St John Ambulance in Cornwall and it was fitting a Falmouth pairing should win as the club has generously supported the event over the years, entering as many as 8 pairs again this time round.

In the 90% handicap allowance Eccleston (receiving 14 shots) and Brown (16) shared a total of 10 gross pars, but the birdie made by the former on the par four 15th was crucial as they clung on to finish with a bogey and two doubles. This kept them just ahead of the runners up, father and son pairing of Wayne and Lewis Woolaway (China Fleet) on 42 points. The two feathered nicely in a round featuring 12 pars and two birdies.

Third place was taken by the Porthpean pairing of Peter Bradbury and Paul Crowther on 41 points, a score matched by last year’s winners Sean Chapman and Peter Floyd (St Mellion). The latter pairing made a great defence of their 2015 win in scoring a one over gross 70.

Fifth spot went to the host club pairing of John Plummer and John Spurgeon also on 41 points.

Looe GC Captain Steve Wilkins welcomed the competitors to the club and expressed how pleased he was the CGU had chosen to stage the event there. In response CGU President Glyn Rowett thanked the club for their hospitality and made reference to the excellent condition of the course, something mentioned by many of the competitors on the day.

On behalf of St John Ambulance (Cornwall), Area Manager Kirsty Walker gave a brief overview of the charity’s work and expressed thanks to those who had taken part and also to the CGU for its ongoing support. The contributions made would assist the SJA in continuing its work in the county.
