Come On Cornwall!

Cornwall as a county is honoured to once again be staging the South Western Counties Golf Association Championships this coming week, with St Enodoc GC as proud hosts. The Championships take place between Sunday 5th June and Friday 10th June and as usual will be contested by teams representing the Cornwall, Devon, Dorset, Gloucestershire, Somerset and Wiltshire County Golf Unions.

Somerset are the current strokeplay and matchplay champions having won both at last years event at Bristol & Clifton GC.

In the inter county matchplay the teams will play each other on a round robin basis with eight singles matches in the morning and four foursomes in the afternoon with players taken from 10 man county squads.

Cornwall’s first inter county opponents are old adversaries and neighbours Devon with the match getting underway from 0815 on Sunday 5th June. Monday sees the Duchy take on Somerset. On Wednesday Cornwall face Gloucestershire with matches to follow against Wiltshire (Thursday) and Dorset (Friday).

This is a week of top class Amateur Golf, which is evidenced by the fact that the last time SWW was played at St. Enodoc (2008) a certain Chris Wood (winner of the BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth on Sunday) was representing Gloucester !  Sixty golfers from throughout the South West will be on show, most of whom will possess a ‘plus’ handicap, and who knows.......maybe the next golfing superstar will be amongst them.

Tuesday 7th June is a break from the inter county format as the individual 36 hole Medal event for the South Western Counties Amateur Championship takes place. From their 10 man squads County Captains will nominate 6 players to form a team total. This competition is the qualifier for the English County Championship. The winning strokeplay county at the end of this year’s championships week will go forward to the English Counties Finals at Sandwell Park GC in September. In 2014 Cornwall, under the guidance of former Captain Richard Simmons, won not only the South Western but then went on to win the national final for the first time in the Duchy’s history. Cornwall’s recently crowned Amateur Champion Joe Cruse (above) will be the first of some 72 competitors to start on the Tuesday morning with play underway from 0700.

The Cornwall team has one change to the personnel nominated by County Captain David Kneebone at the conclusion of County Week recently. This is due to the unfortunate non availability of Sandy Kirton who is replaced by County Junior Captain Jared Mortimore. Harry Hall has just returned from the University of Nevada & Las Vegas where he has just completed  first year exams and was awarded MountainWest TV's Freshman of the Year award. Hall posted 7 top 25 finishes and 4 top 10 finishes in his first season representing UNLV.

The full Cornwall team is:- Joe Cruse (St Enodoc), Ryan Curtis (Bude & North Cornwall), Harry Hall, Matt Richards (West Cornwall), Chris Fleming, Conor Wilson (Perranporth), Richard Jasper (Launceston). Josh Greenaway (Bowood Park) Rob MacGregor (Tehidy Park) and Jared Mortimore (Truro).

We wish them One and All the very best of luck - Come on Cornwall!

SWCGA President Paul Clahane (Trevose) will conclude his year long term of office at the prizegiving which is scheduled to take place at approx.1800 on Friday 10th June.
