Mullion Claim Foster Mitchells

The Mullion pairing of Club Captain Glyn Summersall and Secretary Ray Griffiths triumphed yesterday in the President's Invitational event at St Austell GC when they returned a betterball score of 44 points in a field of 20 pairs to win the Foster Mitchell Cups. Summersall and Griffiths are pictured above with CGU President Glyn Rowett.

The pair scored an outward 9 hole 24 points between them and backed this up with a further 20 on the back nine to register their winning total. The outward 9 included a gross birdie at the 3rd which set them on their way nicely. A further birdie at the 9th contributed to their ongoing total and a solid back 9 left them in the driving seat with that 44 points.

In so doing they pipped into second place the West Cornwall pairing of President Ken Evans and Captain Paul Horsell on 43 points. Evans, who won the event last year, put up an excellent defence for the Cups which were originally awarded for a long standing event staged by the Lelant club. Now reassigned to the President's Invitational the cups almost returned whence they came but Ken and Paul fell short by just the one point.

Third place went to Phil Bott and Hugh Christophers (Launceston) on 42 after their back 9 pushed Mike Allen and Steve Churchill (Carlyon Bay) into 4th place on countback.

After the golf the assembled crowd dined together and were welcomed to St Austell GC by CGU President Glyn Rowett. A short discussion followed on both County Week and the future before Rowett presented the prizes. Summersall in responding thanked the host club for their hospitality and the excellent condition of the course. Coming from Mullion - a course without any trees - he had been particularly pleased in the manner in which he and Ray had negotiated their way around the course. He thanked the CGU for staging the event.
