Cornish Gold Outshines Navy

On a bright dry Saturday morning at Tehidy Park GC new Cornwall County Captain David Kneebone took charge of his first County match. With a very different looking side blending experience and youth Cornwall took on the strength of the Royal Navy in their annual pre-season friendly match. Both sides played some great golf during the morning, with the Navy taking the initiative as they led overall through the first nine holes. At that stage Cornwall were behind in 3 of the 5 foursome matches but the Duchy team showed great determination as they stormed back over the closing morning 9 holes to take the advantage at lunch by 4 matches to 1.

Rob MacGregor (Tehidy Park) and Ryan Curtis (Bude & N Cornwall) teamed up again to beat two locally based Naval personnel in Guy Norris and Al Woodward. The long term pairing of Josh Greenaway (Bowood Park) and Richard Jasper (Launceston) lost their foursomes match but further Cornish wins came from Niall Hutton (Trevose) paired with Aaron Stephens (Newquay) and the Junior duos of Finn Rule and Bradley Barnes (West Cornwall) and Jared Mortimore (Truro) and Ben Browning (Falmouth). The latter pairing beat another Cornish based Navy player in Adam Taylor (Perranporth) and Kieran Dixon. Rule and Barnes (pictured above) had been 4 down through 5 holes but a birdie on 18 saw them claim a one hole win.

The afternoon singles got underway in sunshine, and again the golf was of the highest quality, with a lot of the matches being tight affairs. Of the first 7 matches 5 were all square at the turn, with only the Cornish trio of the experienced Richard Jasper, the younger Niall Hutton and county junior Ben Browning having control of their games with each going on to win. However, Cornwall again fought hard on the back nine. Six of the matches finished on the 18th, and the outcome was in the balance right through to the end. But with four of them going the way of the Duchy and just the two for the Navy Cornwall finally ran out convincing winners with an overall score of 12 - 3. There were second wins of the day for MacGregor, Hutton, Stephens, Rule, Mortimore and Browning.

Kneebone said, “This was a good early test for my team. I would like to congratulate both teams as the match was played in great spirit. I also have to commend Tehidy Park as only weeks ago their course was under water. The green staff must be congratulated on presenting it in such good condition bearing in mind the weather we have suffered. A special mention must go to our four juniors, who were all playing their first full County match. They are certainly ones to look out for”.
