Duchy Beat Exeter University

The Duchy Men’s Team  yesterday took on the might of the Exeter University golf team in a match staged at St Enodoc and came away with a comfortable victory.

Having already held a gathering of the County Squad at Trevose in January, County Captain, David Kneebone continued his pre-season training as a select County Team took on the University. Kneebone had picked a largely tried and tested team for Cornwall's opening fixture of the season

The Cornwall team was: Joe Cruse (St Enodoc), Rob MacGregor (Tehidy Park), Conor Wilson, Chris Fleming, Sandy Kirton (all Perranporth), Richard Jasper (Launceston), Ryan Curtis (Bude & N Cornwall) and Matt Richards (West Cornwall).

The teams were greeted by a golf course in fantastic condition, with everyone involved extremely complimentary about the surface of the putting greens, albeit to a man they appeared to struggle with the speed. That may have, in part been due to the conditions facing the teams, which, whilst dry, saw a strong to gusting wind.

The two teams of eight players played a scratch stableford, with the best six scores to count towards a cumulative total.

Joe Cruse  - pictured above - led out the Cornwall team, and stood on the 10th tee with an exceptional 19 points (-1 par), which was then matched by County team mate, Robert MacGregor. The back nine proved to be far more difficult for all concerned, with the top score of all the sixteen competitors amassed by MacGregor - 14 points.

This left MacGregor - also pictured - with the best effort on the day on 33 points, followed by Cruse with 30 points. With the best six scores totalled it was the Cornwall team that ran out comfortable winners on the day, however it must be noted that not one of the Exeter team had ever played the Church Course before; what an introduction to St. Enodoc Golf Club !

Both Kneebone and Steve Buzza, the Performance Coach for the University of Exeter Golf Team spoke of being very grateful to St. Enodoc for allowing them the use of the golf course, and expressed their desire to make the fixture an annual affair.

Next up for Cornwall is the annual friendly against the Royal Navy at Tehidy Park on 12 March, which is scheduled to take place at Tehidy Park GC on Saturday 12th March with a foursomes and singles format due to start at 9.00am.

Cornwall’s 2016 Channel League campaign will start with a home match v Gwent at St Enodoc on Sunday 17th April 2016. Another 2016 highlight will be South West Week also being hosted by St Enodoc between 4th and 10th June 2016. This will offer the Duchy a good chance to repeat their 2014 success and reach the English County Finals which this year take place at Sandwell Park GC just outside Birmingham in September.

Meanwhile Buzza and his team will be boarding a plane on Wednesday to take on Stirling University over the Torrance Course at Fairmont St. Andrews.  We wish them well.
