U18s Tie with Devon

In what is a busy half term week and fresh from the match versus the County Seniors on Monday our U18s travelled to Saunton yesterday to take on Devon in the annual friendly fixture. And despite getting wet and windswept the boys can count themselves pleased after tying scores with their opponents at 283 points each in the best 10 scores from 12 stableford format.

The match took place on a golf course in great condition, and which all the boys thoroughly enjoyed playing.  Whilst enjoying the course the first couple of hours weather was far from enjoyable with rain falling in a strong cold breeze which made playing conditions very tough. Despite this and with some respite later in the day there was some very good scoring.

The overall match was remarkably tied at 283 points each - although counting all 12 scores the Duchy boys can claim a moral one point victory! And considering none of our team had played Saunton previously this was a great performance.

Highlighting for the Cornish juniors was West Cornwall’s Finn Rule who amassed 38 points and Jon Rowe (Bowood Park) who scored 32 points. Fellow Bowood Park junior Simon Hobbs managed 29 as did Jamie Barton (Launceston) whilst County Junior Captain Jared Mortimore scored 28. Devon's leading players were Tom Trowbridge who also had 38 points, followed by Bradley Scott with 34 points and Matt Cooper with 31 points.

Devon Manager Grahame Moore said “I must congratulate Cornish U18 Manager Andy and the Cornish boys for their performance, considering none of them had played the course before”. The Cornwall Juniors Captain Jared Mortimore congratulated his team on what was a very well earned tie.

Andy Mortimore said "I am very pleased by the overall performances from the juniors at Saunton and Trevose, I am sure with the coaching input they will receive this year and the continued desire to be in the team will make the selection for the Four Counties a difficult process for the management team. Well done again a great couple of days”

Thanks go to Saunton Golf Club, for allowing us to play on their Championship course, to the green keeping staff, the catering and bar staff, all who helped make it a great day, despite that weather.

Today 9 of the team that played yesterday are taking part in a junior Order of Merit event at Perranporth GC
