Age No Barrier as Seniors beat Juniors

For the second time in what has become an annual fixture, the Cornwall Seniors played an early season match against the Cornwall Juniors yesterday at Trevose G&CC.  On a rare sunny , windy and cold day the match was very keenly contested. The result saw the elders of Duchy golf claim a just reward and some revenge for their defeat in last year's inaugural match.

In this half term week, Andy Mortimore the U18 Team Manager had selected a strong junior team in the run up to tomorrows pre-season friendly with Devon at Saunton and a serious competitive match against the Seniors proved very worthwhile.

In the first match the group of Simon Harper, Mike Ellis, Jared Mortimore & Ben Browning got off to a great start with five birdies in the first three holes to leave the senior pair 1 up this high standard was replicated through all the groups with plenty of birdies and even a couple of eagles.

The first four matches saw the Juniors secure an early 3.5 lead, albeit all four games reached the 18th green.

It all looked good for the juniors as Jared Mortimore & Ben Browning turned their match around to win on the 18th, this was then followed by another win on the 18th by young guns Joe Reynard & George Leigh who beat Alan Creber & Colin Ross when Joe Reynard rolled in a 12 foot putt for par for a 1 up victory. Bradley Barnes & Finn Rule failed to hold on to their one hole lead on the 18th when David O’Mahony & Mike Wigley made to half the match. Mike Marshall & Rod Frost also found the juniors too strong as Simon Hobbs & Jon Rowe made a solid par to maintain their 1 up lead.

However, the strength, in depth, of the senior squad then began to tell in the final matches, all four being won by the “used, but still good” oldies. Former county champion Charlie Phillips & Duncan Powell won the 18th to finish 2 up against Tom Matthews & Connor Davidson, this was quickly followed by a win on the 17th by Rob Stacey & Ross Durkin over Jamie Barton & Rhys Kerton and with Paul Clahane & Andy Rowe winning 4 & 3 over the two youngest players in the field Jack Andrew & Cameron Gurd, this left the match tied. In the last match the Seniors were one up coming down 18 and when the senior pair of Alan Poole & Trevor Ashton secured a par and the junior pair of Tristan Barnes & Freddie Norris saw their birdie putt shave the edge of the hole from 12 feet  it was the seniors who had won this very closely contested match.

This all meant the final result was Seniors 4.5 -3.5 Juniors

Mike Marshall, on his final fixture as Cornwall County Seniors Captain, praised the play, and demeanour, of the Junior players.   This was echoed by all present, and bodes well for the future of Cornwall golf. Thanks were expressed by all present to Trevose G&CC for their hospitality.
