Cornish Win in Wales

Cornwall scored an emphatic away win deep into Wales yesterday as they defeated Glamorgan over the James Braid designed heathland course  at Neath GC. The Duchy won 3 and halved one of the morning foursomes to lead 3.5 to 1.5 at lunch and then won 4 and halved 4 of the 10 afternoon singles to record a 9.5 - 4.5 overall victory in their 3rd Channel League match of the season.

In the other Channel League matches played yesterday Gloucestershire had an identical score away win in Somerset, and the Wiltshire v Gwent match result is not yet available.

For Cornwall the morning foursomes set the stall for the victory as Joe Cruse and Adam Curtis started with a 4&3 win. Matt Richards playing with Jon Hancock recorded a 2&1 win and Rob MacGregor and Ryan Curtis won 3&2. The Perranporth duo of County Champion Conor Wilson and Chris Fleming halved their game and the only defeat for the Duchy came when Richard Jasper and Sandy Kirton lost on the last hole.

The afternoon singles saw wins for Richards, Wilson, Jasper and Kirton  together with halves for Adam Curtis, Cruse, Hancock and MacGregor with losses for Ryan Curtis and Fleming. Both Wilson and Kirton played impressively to win their singles by the same 6&5 margin.

County Captain Richard Simmons said 'This was a great team effort and a solid victory away from home. In fact the win should arguably have been more convincing as Adam (Curtis) and Joe (Cruse) were both 4 up with 5 to play in their singles and ended up halving Jon (Hancock) was 1 up playing 18 and lost the hole as did Rob (MacGregor). But nevertheless it was a good win and both Jon and Sandy (Kirton), who have not been regulars this year, fully played their part.'
