Day 3 - Cornwall v Cheshire - English Men's County Seniors Finals - Harrogate Golf Club
The Cornwall Senior team went into day 3 full of optimism after a fantastic win on day 2 against Lincolnshire.
With all of the counties having won 1 match and lost 1 match, any of the four teams from Cheshire, Sussex, Lincolnshire and Cornwall could win the Championships with a win and the other result going their way.
After the morning foursomes there was still no change to the standing as both matches were still tied with Cornwall winning one foursomes match, losing one and halving the other foursomes match against Cheshire. In the other game between Lincolnshire and Sussex it was also tied at 1.5 matches all.
Cornwall's second pairing of Mark Blaber and Mike Reynard won 2 and 1, first off Guy Norris and Ian Ashenden halved their match and the final foursomes partnership of Simon Knowles and Ian Veale losing 1 down.
With the singles starting and with the live scoring via Golf Genius, when the teams were around the end of the back nine Cornwall looked to have a real chance as they were up in three matches, all square in two and down in one and the six singles in the other game between Lincolnshire and Sussex were tied 3 all, a win for Cornwall might of been enough should the other result end in a drawn match.
As the back 9 unfolded, opening the singles for Cornwall was Simon Knowles was three down and eventually lost by 2 and 1. Second off was Guy Norris was always in control and closed his match out 3 and 2. in the fourth match Mike Reynard played outstanding golf to win his match 4 and 3. Out at number 3 was Ian Ashendon, who was 1 up for most of the match but some excellent play on the back 9 holes from his playing opponent resulted in a 2 and 1 defeat.
The match was still tied going into the final two singles that finished with both Mark Blaber and Ian Veale losing by 2 and 1 respectively and the final score was Sussex 5.5 matches to Cornwall's 3.5 matches.
In the other match Lincolnshire managed to win the singles against Cheshire 4 matches to 2 matches to win the match by 5.5 matches to 3.5 matches and this was enough for Lincolnshire to be crowned the English Men's Seniors Champions for 2025 on game points won over Cheshire.
There was fantastic drama and any of the four teams could of won going into the back nine holes and Cornwall can be extremely proud of their efforts in the defence of the title they won in 2024.
