Glamorgan dealt Cornwall Seniors a blow today with a narrow 8 - 7 win at Creigiau GC, meaning a first 2025 defeat for the Duchy team in the Seniors Channel League.
[County Seniors Captain Richard Jones reports]
Cornwall’s fifth Channel League fixture of the season took them to the beautifully presented parkland course at Creigiau, just outside Cardiff, for a top-of-the-table clash against reigning champions Glamorgan.
Morning Foursomes
The lead pairing of Norris & Ashenden got Cornwall off to a flying start, combining beautifully to go three under par and close out a confident 3&2 victory.
Johnson & Keyser found themselves under early pressure and, despite a valiant effort, were edged out 3&2.
Jones & Blaber suffered the same fate, also going down 3&2, before Stoner & Rowe steadied the ship with a savvy and determined 1 up win.
In the final match, Knowles & Veale battled hard against Glamorgan’s most experienced pairing. Hopes of a win were dashed by a long-range chip-in from their opponents, handing Glamorgan a narrow edge as the morning finished:

Afternoon Singles
Cornwall reshuffled their order for the afternoon session, loading the middle with firepower and targeting six points for a narrow win. A tight contest was always on the cards...
Richard Jones (St Enodoc) led the charge against a fellow Welsh international in a titanic battle that saw both players birdie the last. The Glamorgan man edged it 1 up.
Dion Keyser (Newquay) battled gamely against current Welsh international Ivory, but ultimately fell 3&2.
Mark Johnson (Bowood Park) played steady golf but saw several makeable birdie chances slip away. His opponent sealed the win on the last with a sublime bunker shot, handing Cornwall another narrow defeat.
Then came the middle-order punch:
Ian Ashenden (China Fleet) showed his class with a dominant 4&3 win.
Guy Norris (Trevose) and Simon Knowles (Perranporth) each held firm under pressure, delivering excellent 1 up victories.
Mark Blaber (Carlyon Bay) added another point with a convincing 3&2 win.
With three matches remaining, Cornwall needed two points...
Gary Stone (Bude) was outgunned in a 5&4 defeat, and although the evergreen Andy Rowe (Looe) fought to the very end, he was edged out 2&1.
In the final match, Ian Veale (Bristol & Clifton) delivered when it mattered most with a composed 2&1 win.
