SW Week 2025 came to an end for Cornwall with another defeat this time by host county Wiltshire.
The final result (12.25 - 1.75) in favour of the 'Tractor Boys' , as is so often the case, did not reflect the games involved.
Starting on the 10th Cornwall matched Wiltshire through 9 holes but once more the business end of the singles bit the Duchy team. with only Tom Stephens able to gain a win. Two other matches were lost on the 18th and one on 17.
Needing a better goal difference on the basis the wooden spoon was lurking in the shadows, Cornwall set out in the foursomes. Yet again the Duchy team faltered and only Stephens with Billy Downing gained a half, courtesy of Billy's magnificent driver off the deck from 300 yards finding the putting surface and enabling a birdie 4.
Little did any of us know that 0.75 point gained by Billy and Tom meant the wooden spoon was heading the way of neighbours Devon - by 0.25 of a point!
Winner of the Clifford Burden for most points gained during the matchplay went to Brandon Skidmore (Glos) with 9 points from a possible 10.
Best Cornish performer in 6th spot was Tom Stephens with 7.5, with Matt Richards next on line (5.5). George Law, Jon Hancock and Ethan Tempest were all on 3, Sam Crocker (2.5), Louis Archer and Billy Downing (2), Jamie Greet & Brandon Armitage (both 1.5).
Armitage and Downing received county badges and ties from County Captain Adam Bridgewater. All week long the team were supported by a number of caddies in Nick Datson, Andy Beazley, Mark Greet, Derek Law and Chris Pountney and this too was acknowledged by Bridgewater and the players. On behalf of the players Matt Richards presented Bridgewater with a memento of his time at Cumberwell Park and also one to Pountney on the occasion of his last SW Week in the County Secretary and caddie role.
Retiring SWCGA President Geoff Titt (Wilts) was presented with his past president's badge by new President John Smith (Dorset).
SWCGA Championship Week 2026 will take place at the Isle of Purbeck GC, Dorset from 7th - 12th June.
