Louis Archer Wins Second County Championship

Louis Archer pitches to the 10th at Trevose

St Enodoc's Louis Archer is now a two time County Amateur Champion after he convincingly beat Max Gay (Carlyon Bay) in

the final of this years Championship held at Trevose Golf & Country Club

The 36 hole final at the conclusion of 4 days of the Amateur Championship saw Archer and Gay halve the first two holes before the former got his nose in front with a par at the third hole.Gay immediately bounced back taking the 4th, which was conceded by Archer.

At the next a bogey 5 was enough for Archer to regain the lead which he did not lose thereafter. The pair traded pars on the next three holes before a birdie 4 at the 9th saw Archer go 2 up. This lead was extended at the 10th (3up). At the 12th a par was good enough for Gay to pull one back but Archer claimed the 13th to remain at 3 up. Gay took the 14th with a par before the pair shared the 15th.

Archer then stamped total authority on the match as he won the final 3 holes of the morning round with two pars and a birdie at the 17th to hold a commanding lead of 5 up at the lunch interval.

Gay appeared to have run out of steam after 4 days of golf in which he had probably exceeded his expectations by getting to the final and against a strong opponent never looked likely to get back into the match and was struggling with his game. Nevertheless the two played their match in good spirit.

When the pair resumed Archer went further ahead winning the 1st. To his credit there was still some fight in Gay who won the 2nd but a birdie at the 3rd by Archer saw the lead extended to 6. Wins for Archer at 4 ,5 and 6 meant he stood at 9 up. Gay managed to reduce this by one at the 7th before the pair tied the next two holes.

At the 10th Archer laid up with his second and then pitched to 10 feet. Gay had come up short left and whilst he put his ball onto the green he was outside of his opponent. When Gay missed the putt which was conceded for a 5, Archer had his chance to close the match out. He did so rolling in his birdie putt, achieving a 9&8 victory.

Having won the Championship previously at Newquay in 2023, Archer was delighted. In his speech at the presentation he thanked host club Trevose for staging the Championship on an excellently prepared course, He thanked the CGU for its work in staging the entire week and paid tribute to his opponent Gay.
