The Cornwall Boys U14 and U16 teams both enjoyed great wins yesterday at a very hospitable St Enodoc GC despite difficult wet weather conditions.
The U14 Jack Roberts League match saw Cornwall trail 3- 1 to the visitors after the 9 hole morning foursomes, but then surge back to claim the win as they took 7 of the afternoon's 8 singles to win overall 8 - 4. The win sees Cornwall in a strong league position with a win away to Wiltshire already in the bank and a narrow defeat to Devon, Cornwall's remaining match is away to Somerset at Long Sutton GC on 13th August.
[Team Manager Steve Chapman reports]
Cornwall Under 14s played their third match of the season against Dorset in the Jack Roberts League at St Enodoc. The course was stunning and the boys were looking to follow up on last month's win against Wiltshire and extend their unbeaten run to a couple of games.
With 9 holes being played in the morning foursomes, Cornwall were not off to the best of starts and down in a few games. St Enodoc pairing of Alfie Chapman and Bobby Godfrey lost on the last hole. Second game went the same way with Dorset taking the honours 4/2. Harry Jolliff and Harry Gurd got Cornwall a point in the third game playing great golf, running out 4/3 winners. The final game in the morning saw Rory Hudson and Ollie Lawrence have a great game but eventually lost 2 down. It was all to play for in the afternoon with Dorset taking a lunchtime lead 3-1.
Cornwall needed 5.5 points in the afternoon to gain victory so needed a fast start. We got that with Alfie and Bobby taking early leads and both finishing their games 3/2 and 5/3 respectively. With Harry Faull making a great comeback he eventually lost his match 3/2. News was really positive out on the course with all matches going in the favour of Cornwall. The points kept flowing and soon enough we were in a winning position with Harry Jolliff playing great golf winning 6/4. Ethan Kinski won the fifth match 2/1 , Rory Hudson had won 5/4 , Harry Gurd won the 16th and 17th to win 2/1 and was then left to Ollie Lawrence in the last match to wrap it up for Cornwall winning 3/2 and taking 7 of the 8 singles.
Cornwall ran out 8 -4 winners and our second win of the season was in the bag.
A fantastic performance by all the boys and some great golf played . We now enter the last game of the season in 2 weeks time against Somerset in really good form and a chance to take the trophy with a win. A massive thanks to St Enodoc Golf Club for hosting the match, the course was fantastic and we were looked after really well throughout the day and the boys thoroughly enjoyed the experience.
Meanwhile in the U16 Ben Enoch League the morning foursomes saw Cornwall lead 3 -1. The afternoon singles was a different story but the Duchy team managed to take 3.5 points from the 8 available to get over the line 6.5 - 5.5. [Full report to follow] The U16s now have two wins from two and their remaining match is also at Long Sutton. Results
