County Juniors Battle to Beat Tehidy Park

On Sunday 14th July Cornwall County Juniors were at Tehidy Park taking on a host club men's team in a friendly match comprising foursomes and singles match play.

[Team manager Mark Wallwork reports]

Format - The first player in each side played an 18-hole match play due to odd numbers, with  the rest of the team playing 9 hole foursomes on the front 9 followed by a 9 hole singles match on the back 9. The course was in fantastic condition and thankfully the rain stayed at bay allowing some sunny intervals through the day.

Tommy Miller was first to tee off in the 18-hole singles match against Marco Sciuto and the pair were then followed by the foursomes matches.

It was a tightly fought contest throughout. Coming in on the 9th Heath Coombes and Harry Drewett  lost 2/1 against the very experienced pairing of Tom and Josh Chapman. Tiernan Wallwork and Joab Atkins  continued their unbeaten run in county foursomes winning their match 4/3 against Alex Hinds and Adam Notman. Kai Dingle and Fred Kirkland  just missed out with a 2/1 loss to Piran Kent & Alex Macinnes. Young Bobby Godfrey, the only U14's player on the day, secured a 3/2 win with Jay Dingle against Sam Williams & Chris Rovery. Archie Haynes and Quinn Bateman did well to lose 2 down to Bradley Rogers & David Williams while giving 8 shots away. The last of the pairings Sam Hanton and Ryan Tozer lost 2/1  to Phil Staton & Steve Rovery giving away 13 shots.

The Foursomes Results saw Tehidy Park take a 4 -2 lead

Add to this Tommy Miller losing his singles match which was won by Tehidy's Sciuto  4/3 and the host club were 5 -2 to the good.

Moving onto the back 9 individual match play the Cornwall boys started to turn up the heat, producing some great golf. Heath Coombes narrowly lost out against Josh Chapman (1 down), Harry Drewett halved his match with Tom Chapman, before Tiernan Wallwork delivered the first win 2/1 against Alex Hinds. Joab Atkins was pipped 1 down against a very strong CTC player Adam Notman and Kai Dingle lost his match 3/1 to Piran Kent.

However, the Cornwall Juniors really came good winning the remaining 7 games.  Fred Kirkland won 3/2 against Alex Macinnes. Bobby Godfrey won 1 up against Sam Williams, Jay Dingle won 3/2 against Chris Rovery, Archie Haynes won 2up over Brad Rogers, and Quinn Bateman won  1up on David Williams. Sam Hanton won 1up over Steve Rovery and in the final match Ryan Tozer beat Tehidy vice-captain Phil Staton 3/2.
