Broadstone Golf Club, Dorset was the setting for this year's South Western Counties Golf Association Boys Championship and it proved to be a hurdle too far for the Cornwall Boys team.
Despite some good individual performances on a difficult wet day, the Duchy team finished bottom of the pile on a team total of 815 and some 89 shots (over the 36 holes) behind winners Gloucestershire on 726. The format saw 5 scores count from amongst a nominated 6 of the 8 man team.
The best three performers for Cornwall were all Newquay Juniors. Heath Gillespie shot 83 in Round 1 but rallied with an afternoon 77 for a 160 total and 29th spot. Heath Coombes started with a 5 over par 75 but fell away by 10 shots in Round 2 to also finish on 160 (+20) and 32nd spot overall. Tommy Miller started badly with an 86 but he too dug deep and returned a 75 second round for 33rd spot. Next best for the Duchy was Junior Captain Harry Drewett (Falmouth) with a morning round of 77 but he too fell away in the afternoon to an 85.
SWCGA Boys Champion for 2024 was Brandon Skidmore (Gloucestershire) on 138 (-2) after two excellent rounds of 69 which saw him finish 4 shots clear of team mate and runner up Leo Powell. Lewy Hayward (Wiltshire) was third on 143.
