Joe 'Cruses' to Four on the Bounce

Joe Cruse flanked by Bude Club Captain Derek Bryant and CGU President Martin Edwards

It was four in a row for Joe Cruse as he claimed the Cornish Closed Championship at Bude on Sunday. Having won the competition over the past three years PGA Professional Cruse (now at Bowood Park) did not have it all his own way over the 36 holes as he was pushed all the way by host club Professional and good friend Adam Curtis. In fact only countback separated the two and whilst many neutrals would love to have seen the two engage in a play-off the current competition rules prevailed.

Bude Golf Club once again provided a course in splendid condition, a tribute to Jaime Acton and his team who are making quite a name for themselves as the club continues to invest and enhance its reputation. After a torrid and wet winter the sunshine made a welcome appearance accompanied by light winds which did strengthen somewhat across the day. Only one late shower spoiled those out late in the day.

Curtis and Ollie James (Launceston) led the way after Rd 1 with2 under par rounds of 69 followed by Cruse a shot further back. Five others returned level par 71s so it was clear the overall result was likely to be close.

And so it proved. James fell away with a pm 78 and of those on the morning 71 the best afternoon round was by Rob MacGregor (Tehidy Park) with  a 70, which saw him finish third overall (level 142). Current County Champion Louis Archer (St Enodoc) shot 72 to finish fourth (143)and James Ruddick (Perranporth) added a 72 to be 5th overall (cb 143).

But at the sharp end Cruse returned the best round of the day - a 3 under 68 - to finish on 138, this total matched by Curtis who can consider himself unlucky to lose on countback.

Bobby Godfrey
Kai Dingle

In the nett scores competition 14 year old Bobby Godfrey (St Enodoc) put in a sterling performance with two rounds of 68, 6 shots better than his 12 handicap to claim top spot on nett 136. Coming from great golfing stock and with former County Team member and father Kristian on the bag, Bobby is one to watch for the future. Second nett spot, 4 shots back, also went to a junior in Freddie Kirkland (Tehidy Park). Freddie (9 handicap) was disappointed with a morning 74 but turned in an excellent pm 66 for a -2 total of 140. Josh Small (Carlyon Bay was 3rd also on 140 and Kai Dingle (St Enodoc) 4th on 142 (level).

And it was Dingle who claimed the U21 Championship from amongst the 16 eligible 'youngsters' with his two gross rounds of 73 and 77. Second on countback was Tommy Miller (Newquay) with Oban Webber (St Mellion) 3rd on 153 (79 + 74) and Ethan Tempest 4th on 154 (74 + 80).

Bude Club Captain Derek Bryant welcomed those present to the club and spoke of how proud was to beb hosting another CGU event, He also praised the greenkeeping staff at the club for the fantastic work they have been doing in difficult conditions. CGU President Martin Edwards thanked Derek and Bude also making reference to the superb course condition., before presenting the prizes.
