Cornwall Win Against Royal Navy

[County Captain Peter Simmons reports]

Following months of wet weather conditions were always going to be tough and especially on a parkland course in March.  Despite the recent weather Tehidy Park made every effort to have their course playable for this annual fixture against the Royal Navy, something we are extremely grateful for.

This annual match is always a competitive one and is a great opportunity to give some players within the squad a chance to prove their talents to the captain.  The ten players selected mixed experience and youth which proved to be a great combination on the day.

The foursomes line up:

Rob Macgregor & Ben Browning

Jon Hancock & Sam Crocker

Max Stockwell & George Tunbridge

Ed Sherlock & James Ruddick

George Champion & Tommy Miller

Leading Cornwall out was Tehidy player Rob Mac playing with Ben Browning (Falmouth).  Solid play from both players against Ryan Moore & Adam Taylor provided Cornwall with the first point of the match.  Second pairing of Jon Hancock & Sam Crocker was a close affair with Cornwall just edging it by 2&1.  Max Stockwell and George Tunbridge who has just been appointed as General Manager of St Enodoc also played solidly and despite George not being used to trees, they managed to win by a 3&1 margin!

The always smiling Ed Sherlock maintained his smile as he and partner James Ruddick snuck over the line with a 1up win over Nick West & Mike Clark.  That left George Champion and our youngest player Tommy Miller to try and make it a clean sweep in the morning foursomes.  They did not disappoint and managed to get a 2&1 win over the Royal Navy Golf Team captain, Freddie Lomas and his partner Chris Harris to give Cornwall a 5-0 score line at lunch.

The afternoon was led out by Rob Macgregor who had a fantastic match with Adam Taylor.  Rob would win 3&1 as Adam sadly lost a plugged ball on the 16th hole. Further wins came from Jon Hancock, and then Sam Crocker played sublime golf to win 6&4 against Gareth Law who was making his debut for the Royal Navy team.  Not a kind welcome by ‘Inspector Sammy C’!

In match four Ben Browning lost 1 down to give the RN their first point which was quickly followed as Max Stockwell and George Tunbridge both halved their matches.  George Champion and James Ruddick provided further points for Cornwall whilst Ed Sherlock battled for a half point having been 4 down heading into the back nine.  The tenth and final match on the course went to the Royal Navy as James Lown defeated Tommy Miller 6&5.

Final match Score. Cornwall 11.5 Royal Navy 3.5 Match Sheet

A good day despite wet conditions and as always we were very well looked after by the catering team at Tehidy.  My thanks to Tehidy Park and their members for allowing the match to be played which is greatly appreciated by the CGU and the players.
