Golf Access Available For All Through the CGU

Tomorrow evening at the CGU Junior Conference the Cornwall Golf Union will be announcing a partnership with the Golf Access team for 2024, which sees the CGU making a significant financial commitment to affiliated clubs to support the golf development programme in Cornwall. In total £4,500.00 is being set aside to support clubs in using Golf Access to assist with getting juniors, young people and adults alike playing the game and becoming members and long-term golfers in Cornwall. The more people we all get playing the more successful and sustainable our clubs will be.

The Golf Access scheme has been developed to assist golf clubs to encourage new participants to play golf for the first time, taking them from initial coaching, practice grounds and driving ranges to playing golf on a course. The programme is designed to develop both junior and adult golfers new to the game, progressing from a set up of forward tees to a courses normal tee set in a structured and progressive programme.

Progress for each participant is recorded on the Golf Access locker room platform. Participants will progress through a banded system. Once the programme is complete golfers will have the confidence and skills to progress to the courses normal tee sets.

The Golf Access model will only be successful if the programme is used and run effectively, driven by clubs and their workforce. This scheme is not just for the use of the PGA club professionals but will need to be supported by junior organisers, volunteers, and other club officials. The Golf Access sessions must be regular and supervised at least twice a month. If this is achieved clubs will see real progress with juniors and adults alike into playing golf. It gives new golfers a safe environment in which to integrate into our clubs and to start playing the game.

To ensure the CGU’s investment is used and gives value, clubs activity will be monitored on the Golf Access Locker Room platform. Affiliated clubs taking up the option of the CGU funding will be expected to complete a service level agreement. The CGU are able to fully fund 15 clubs for the forthcoming year. The first 15 clubs that apply for this funding will be provided with funding for the forthcoming year. We are aware some clubs are already signed to golf access. These clubs are also eligible to receive the golf access funding.

Expressions of interest along with completed service level agreements must be with the county secretary by 5.00pm on Friday 15th March 2024. Agreements are attached on a separate document with forwarding details.

Golf Access, created by PGA Professional Simon Wood, has received many testimonials including one from a former Cornwall County team player now PGA professional Adam Frayne, at Yelverton, who says, "Golf Access has been a fantastic addition to the coaching programme here.  It really motivates participants to keep coming back to play more golf.  The on-course format is totally unique for beginners, while the bands and certificates gives them a clear pathway to obtaining a handicap.”
