Devon pip Cornwall Boys at Trevose
Perhaps it was no surprise with the recent seemingly endless wet weather to find Trevose G&CC shrouded in murky damp conditions yesterday for the annual junior pre-season encounter between Cornwall Boys and their Devon counterparts. Whilst wet on the outside a warm welcome was presented to both teams of 12 boys and a number of parents.
The match sees the two teams face off in a Scratch Stableford with the 10 best scores from each contributing to a team aggregate total. As the match got underway, whilst it remained damp the rain eased somewhat and starter CGU Secretary Chris Pountney got everyone off in good time before retiring to a drier spot. Out on the course Devon Boys Manager Mark Sangster braved the elements from start to finish as the mist rolled in followed by heavier rain. Predominantly everyone felt we got away with it overall and the compliments paid by both teams on course condition were plenty.
Top scorers on the day were two boys from each team returning 31 scratch stableford points - for Devon, Noah Mulligan (Thurlestone) and Stan White (Saunton), and for Cornwall, Heath Gillespie (Newquay) and, on his first ever visit to Trevose, Oban Webber (St Mellion). Mulligan finished in top spot based on countback from Gillespie.
30 points were achieved again by two players from each county - George Inch (Thurlestone) and Ben Wilman (East Devon) whilst for Cornwall Kai Dingle (St Enodoc) and Heath Coombes (Newquay), Kai's younger brother Jay - a late replacement for Cornwall - scored an impressive 29 scratch points off his 10 handicap.
With the final group to come in Cornwall and Devon were tied but better scores in the grouping saw Devon run out winners by just 4 points on 284 to 280.
24 hungry if mildly damp juniors set about their post match meal before Kai Dingle made a very eloquent and considered speech in which he congratulated Devon and thanked Trevose for their hospitality. Miles McMurdo responded on behalf of Devon.
