The Cornwall Golf Union Meets Schools Again

The Cornwall Golf Union once again took up the opportunity to exhibit at the annual PE & Sports Activity conference held this year at The New County Hall, Truro. Hosted by Active Cornwall this years theme was centred around sport being made available for all communities in particular the less affluent families in the county. Richard Bunch the CGU Development Officer and the CGU President Martin Edwards hosted the CGU exhibition through the day.

The weather on the day reduced the number of delegates and exhibitors but a number of key note speeches and workshops were still well attended.

This was again an ideal platform to promote golf within schools and other community settings throughout the Duchy. It was also an opportunity to introduce the partnership formed between the CGU and DT Sports Coaching who provide the PE and Sports activity in 47 schools. We now have two active community golf instructors in their team helping us to deliver and develop the game through schools.

Richard Bunch said "This is the second year we have had the opportunity to attend this event and network with schools and other community projects. It's an ideal platform for us to showcase the game of golf against other mainstream sports that you would expect to see as staples in any educational setting. To have an exhibit stand directly opposite the Football Association was a real plus for us and we certainly gained a great deal more interest."

The CGU have been able to engage expressions of interest with a further 25 schools and community projects on the day.  Richard goes on to say "We are still working through schools from last year and to have this additional interest is fantastic. We also start a programme of coaching with the Aspire Multi Academy Trust in February next year which has 37 schools so I think we are starting to make some real headway now. We could do with pushing through another dozen community coaches to work in the schools. It would be great if players from our affiliated clubs wanted to get involved. I also have a number of teachers who are golfers themselves that are keen to become qualified."

If any individuals are keen to become a community coach, junior organiser or volunteer at their home club please contact Richard Bunch on 07958 - 262193 or email JDO.CGU2022@gmail.com
