Charlestown Primary Receive Golfway Kit

Craig Bracher and Andrew Clotworthy together with pupils at Charlestown Primary School

Cornwall Golf Union President Andrew Clotworthy and the Junior Development Officer Richard Bunch had the pleasure of visiting Charlestown Primary School and presenting the school with a complete set of Golfway kit.

The schools Year 5 teacher, Craig Bracher entered the free prize draw offered by the CGU when he attended the PE and Sports Activity conference at the Exeter University campus at Penryn last month. This was the first time the CGU had been given the opportunity to attend the event as an exhibitor. It was an ideal platform to meet with 142 delegates representing schools and other activity groups from all over the county.

Andrew Clotworthy said "The conference was an ideal opportunity for the Cornwall Golf Union to promote the game of golf at Junior level. Visiting Charlestown Primary school last Thursday was a real pleasure, and I was delighted to see how the pupils at the school were immediately excited to get involved with the new kit we provided."

Richard Bunch also stated "We quickly identified that the education system in Cornwall is an ideal opportunity to gain interest in golf from children and young people. We have been overwhelmed with the response from both secondary and primary schools together with other sports activity centres and community groups. With over 50 expressions of interest from these groups it is now essential the CGU and its key partners follow up this success and generate more interest in young people playing golf and getting involved with our affiliated clubs."

Bunch continued "There is a bigger picture to consider with the potential for adults to become involved in the game through the increase in Junior activity across the county. This is a further opportunity for our clubs to consider"

Note: Golfway equipment is designed and produced by The Masters Golf Company and are available through the Golf Foundation, a registered charity that introduces children to golf, from all backgrounds, creating golfers. They help young people to ‘Start and Stay’ in golf by making their introduction to the game fun, innovative, inspiring, inclusive and enriching. Simplified versions of the game are taken to schools and community groups, introducing children to golf clubs, teaching playing and transferable life skills, and enabling youngsters to keep playing and enjoying the game for years to come. Golf can change lives for the better; an ideal game for helping children to develop valuable personal skills such as confidence, resilience and emotional wellbeing – qualities that will benefit them for the rest of their lives. The game can also help youngsters to understand the importance of values such as honesty, integrity and respect, as it demands a strong level of personal responsibility.

The charity is supported by The R&A, headline sponsor HSBC and a variety of organisations working closely with national partners (Professional Golfers’ Association, England Golf, Scottish Golf & Wales Golf) to help young people have a safe and fun introduction to golf.

The Golfway clubs themselves are designed for young children of all abilities and allow games and practice drills, to deliver fun and meaningful golf sessions. The games-based approach naturally encourages fun which is important to engage the audience. Blending the games with the ‘key points to success’ to promote fundamental golf skills, and ‘Skills for Life’ learning, ensures a meaningful experience for all participants.
