Falmouth Retain Junior Maxam Cup

Falmouth Juniors - Winners Junior Maxam Cup 2022 with CGU President Matt Tucknott
(L toR: Tucknott, Harry Drewett, Will Sercombe, Maisie Drewett, Archie Fox, Alex Minter & Isaac D'Bue)

The team from host club Falmouth retained the CGU Junior Maxam Cup yesterday with a 161 total from the best two out of their 3 pairs for a 5 shot victory over runners up West Cornwall. The Falmouth juniors were out first in what were difficult often damp conditions on a course playing long and with a stiff breeze impacting some of the clifftop holes. However, as the very mild day progressed, whilst the win did not disappear, drier conditions prevailed, with the sun making brief and welcome appearances. Having won the Junior Maxam Cup earlier this year when the 2021 competition had to be held over, Falmouth's juniors once again came up trumps.

For them the foursomes pairing of Archie Fox and Will Sercombe returned an 80 for their teams best score of the day and this was added to by siblings Maisie and Harry Drewett who were just a shot further back on 81, making up the 161 total. It was after all the best two scores from 3 to count. The third Falmouth pair of Alex Minter and Isaac D'Bue shot 83.

Whilst West Cornwall were disappointed with their 166 total, consolation came in the form of best gross pairs score by Junior County Captain Ethan Tempest partnered by Jack Kevern as they scored a day's best 78, to which was added and 89 by Jonty Jenkin and Tristan Woolcock. Chalotte Jenkin and Finley Hendra scored 92.

Runners up in the best gross pairs were Falmouth's Fox & Sercombe with their 80.

Their best pair, Ethan Best & Liam Rule returned an 87 to which Mabel Gosling-Brown & James Tucknott added a 92 for their 179 gross total. Their nett total was 138 just one shot better than nett runners up, Perranporth who had just two pairs competing on 139. Bryn Evans and Will Hardwick scored 81 and their 167 gross total was completed with an 86 from Rhys Evans and Harrison Gurd.

Best nett pairs prize on the day went to Best & Rule with a nett 62, 6 shots better than the nett total of 168 for Bryn Evans & Hardwick.

The very impressive and new Falmouth clubhouse was packed with juniors and parents for the presentation. Falmouth GC Captain Nick Chinn welcomed everyone and spoke of how pleased the club were to have hosted the event. The redevelopment of the clubhouse and course meant the club were now every proud of their asset and as a result hoped they would feature more frequently as avenue for CGU competition. The club had achieved great results in CGU team competitions in recent times and felt they were very much on the map. Chinn praised the amount of time and hard work put in by their Junior Organiser, Mick Fox with the club juniors and of how this had paid off.

During the presentation CGU Juniors President Matt Tucknott was able to thank in person Falmouth GC's Proprietor David Hughes for the hospitality extended to the CGU Junior Section and expressed how very much appreciated this was. Before presenting the prizes, he thanked all of the club staff who had played their part in making the day such a success for the 74 juniors who had taken part. The attendance level had surpassed more recent staging of the competition. He made reference to the older juniors for whom this was the last competition at this level and thanked them all for their contribution wishing them well for their futures in golf - in particular Maisie Drewett, Maddie Watson, Ethan Tempest, Alex Minter, Will Sercombe, Isaac D'Bue, Will Hardwick, Jonty Jenkin and Connor Vanstone.

All in all, a great day at Falmouth!
