Cornwall Golf Union

Meet our Junior Development Officer

With the backing of the membership the Cornwall Golf Union has introduced a Junior Development Officer and appointed Richard Bunch to the role. This role has been designed to support the unions 29 affiliated clubs increase the number of children and young people playing the game of golf. Our ambition is to grow the game of golf within the county of Cornwall, increase club memberships and identify at an early-stage junior golfers having the potential for development to an elite level, both for the Cornwall Golf Union, nationally, and beyond.

Richard has had a lifelong connection with golf joining his first club in Sussex in 1974. For a time, he was the Assistant Professional at North Downs Golf Club where he became a clubmaker and gaining a real insight into how clubs ran and operated before moving into his family's hospitality business. He had though been given a grounding and experience in the game of golf. Richard served with the Metropolitan Police from 1990 until recently. During this time, he experienced golf club committee work at his home club Holtye, Kent and represented both club and the police across the country - something which gave him further experience of how clubs operated and how large-scale events were organised.

Since coming to the Duchy Richard has worked extensively at Cape Cornwall Club and been Club Captain at West Cornwall GC with further committee experience at both. He has represented the County Seniors and was a member of the team who won Seniors Channel League success in 2019. He still boasts a 4.5 handicap.

In addition, he will support the transition from initial programmes into club-based activity, develop junior coaching opportunities throughout the county. He will identify opportunities to introduce golf to parents/guardians and other adults, build professional working relationships with our supporting bodies, (England Golf, The Golf Foundation, Golf Access, the English Schools Golf Association and Schools Golf, and the Professional Golfers Association) as well as developing the workforce and volunteers supporting Junior Golf in Cornwall. Above all he will ensure we are inclusive and encourage participation from the vulnerable and those suffering some form of disability

The CGU wishes to assist junior golfers in developing skills for life, developing junior golfers to act with respect, honesty, integrity, developing their perseverance, concentration, and self-motivation and the understanding of the ethos of ‘team.’ All those involved with the development of junior golf within Cornwall will do so adhering to the Cornwall Golf Union Codes of Conduct and Safeguarding Policies.
