Merlin's Marland is Seniors Stableford Champion 2022

Bob Marland - Overall winner Seniors County Championship Stableford

Merlin Golf Club's Robert Marland stole the show at St Austell yesterday as he claimed the major prize and became Cornwall's Seniors Stableford Champion for 2022.

12 handicapper Marland returned aa gross 78 on the par 69 course and his round included 7 pars and 3 front nine gross birdies. He went out in one under par and this was worth 25 points. Whilst the back 9 was less successful (just 25 points) his 40 point haul was two points better than anyone else amongst the 95 competitors. Marland won the overall prize whilst competing in the 75 years of age plus category and naturally he topped this group as well. Well played Bob!

With an overall competition and five different age group categories there was plenty on offer at St Austell. Despite recent weather conditions - and yes it was another very warm day with little breeze - the course was presented in excellent condition with the greens in particular attracting praise from a large proportion of the field - well done Matt Lock and his team.

In the 'youngest 'of the seniors age groups - 55 to 59 years - the winner was David Allen (Budock Vean) with 36 points, one point ahead of last years winner in this group, Simon Tonkin (Merlin), whilst Michael Rooney (Porthpean) was 3rd on 35 points.

In the 60-64 years of age group, Cornwall County Senior Andy Rowe was the winner with an impressive 38 points from his 3 handicap. Second spot went to Alan Adams (Cape Cornwall) on 37 points and on countback this just edged out Gary Marquand (Trethorne).

Glyn Rowett (left) receives the 65-69 years of age trophy from CGU Vice-President Martin Edwards

The current club President at St Austell, former CGU President and current SWCGA President, Glyn Rowett, put his local knowledge front and centre to claim the honours in the 65-69 years of age Category. Rowett returned 36 points to edge Paul Farquhar (Porthpean) on countback. Third was Daryll Rowe (Newquay) five points further back.

The 70-74 years bracket was won by Peter Coleman (Carlyon Bay) on 37 points from Last year's winner, Brian Joy (West Cornwall) on 34 points. Third was Geoff Spiller (Lanhydrock Hotel & GC) on 33 points

As already mentioned Marland won the 75 years plus group from second placed David Rawle (Bowood Park) on 32 points and in 3rd was Lanhydrock stalwart Brian Liggat, a point further back on 31.

A short prizegiving was led by CGU Vice President Martin Edwards who praised the host club for their course condition and their hospitality. Fortunately some prizewinners were still present for which they were heartily thanked in a brief and amusing presentation in which there was audience participation and a good atmosphere.
