U18s Retain Greenaway Trophy Title

Cornwall's Greenaway Trophy winning team (L to R): Heath Coombes, Hugo Watson, Kai Dingle, Harry Drewett,
Charlie Ward, Ethan Tempest, Connor Vanstone, Will Sercombe, Jack Kevern and Archie Fox

[U18 Team Manager Andrew Kevern reports]

After previous away victories against both Devon and Dorset, Cornwall U18s knew that a home victory against Somerset at Perranporth GC on Thursday would mean they retain the Greenaway League title.

With a strong, cool breeze blowing across the Perranporth links, Cornwall set out in the morning foursomes determined to start strongly. Indeed, after 9-holes, all matches were going Cornwall's way with all Cornish pairings ahead; and that's the way it remained, although a late Somerset rally in match four meant a halved match.

In the foursomes there were wins for the Bude pairing of Charlie Ward & Connor Vanstone won 2 & 1 against Alex Marshall & Theo Anderson-Gannon, for the West Cornwall pair of Ethan Tempest & Jack Kevern by 2 & 1 against Cameron Fear & Kyle Miller, for Hugo Watson & Harry Drewett by 4 & 2 against Tom Canavan & Joe Cox and for Heath Coombes & Kai Dingle who finished 2 up on Troy Young & Olly Tripp. The Falmouth pairing of Archie Fox & Will Sercombe halved with Jackson Carey & Josh Mowat.

This meant at lunch, the score was 4.5 - 0.5 in Cornwall's favour.

In the afternoon singles, Cornwall knew 3.5 points would win the match and the title. In a close match, Junior County Captain Tempest was edged out 3 & 2 by Marshall. This was quickly followed with Ward losing the 18th and the match 1 down to Anderson-Gannon. However, Vanstone, Kevern, Watson and Drewett were all in control of their matches and soon reeled off quick, successive victories to help Cornwall secure the required four points needed for victory.

Kevern won 2&1 v Miller whilst there were very convincing wins for Vanstone by 5&4 v Canavan, Watson  6&4 against Fear and Drewett  by 7&6 v Mowat.

Fox closed out his match 1 up against Carey and despite defeats for Coombes and Sercombe, Kai Dingle - stepping up to represent the U18s for the second time in a week - played great golf to secure another win by a 3 & 2 margin over Joe Cox.

Thanks to Perranporth GC for hosting the match and to the caterers for providing excellent service throughout the day. Also, to Ian Poole (Somerset manager) who made great efforts to get the Somerset team down to Cornwall during what is a very busy time for junior golfers.

During the post-match speeches, Team Manager, Andrew Kevern, thanked the players for their commitment this season and wished those juniors leaving the junior ranks (Tempest, Ward, Vanstone, Sercombe, Jonty Jenkin and Will Hardwick) all the best for the future.

Good wishes were also given to Tempest, who next week will be participating in the R&A British Boys Championships in Scotland.

With two of the team (Tempest & Kevern) making their full Men's debut this season in the Channel League and another two receiving call-ups to the Men's' Development team (Vanstone & Ward), the future is looking bright for Cornwall golf.
