U14s Lose in Wiltshire

(Cornwall U14 Team Managers Mark Wallwork and Lee Bateman report on last Sundays away fixture in Wiltshire)

We'd like to begin by thanking The Wiltshire for hosting the event, providing the food, and making our Cornwall team feel so welcome. Stuart, the golf professional, went above and beyond to ensure that our practise round and match went smoothly, as did Ian Welding, the Wiltshire U14 manager, who helped coordinate the match, food and venue. Not to mention all of the boys and parents who made the journey.

Strong gusts of wind and cloudy weather with occasional sunny breaks created tough golfing conditions and made it easy for the boys from both counties to discover the water hazards on the course's 17 lakes.

Starting from the 10th tee, we played a 9-hole foursomes match with the wind against the water and OB on the right. Holding the fairway was challenging for Cornwall.

Tommy and Joab found it hard to show their true potential and lost their foursomes match 4&3. Jago and Harry played well together, with Jago’s long drive and Harry’s short game combining well, but unfortunately they lost 2&1. Tiernan and Quinn had a seesaw battle and were all square going down the last hole, but again losing out to Wiltshire 1 down. Henry and Jay played a fantastic game complimenting each other’s play and winning their match 3&2

Foursomes results Wiltshire 3 - 1 Cornwall

At the start of the singles contest, all of our Cornwall boys managed to safely clear the water with their tee shot, with Jago nearly reaching the green with a fantastic drive. Harry's confidence grew after his frequent water finding on the practise round.  Moving through the round Tommy found it tough going and was 4 down on the 8th hole. On the seventh, Tiernan was dominating at 3 up. Joab was having a real fight being A/S on the 7th. Quinn was making a valiant effort, but his opponent was playing some superb golf. Jay was looking strong throughout the match holding the lead until the latter stages.

On the turn Tommy was 5 down, Tiernan 2up, Joab A/S, Quinn 5 Down, Jago 1 down, Jay 3up Henry 1 down and Harry A/S. Tommy kept fighting to bring the score back to 3 down, but he was eventually defeated on the 17th. Tiernan held his opponent through the match winning his game 2 up on the 18th. Joab lost his match on the 17 2&1, Quinn lost 6&4, Jago lost 4&3 , Henry lost 3&2. Jay Dingle held the lead for most of the round, but unfortunately he was just pipped on the 18th losing 2 down. Harry Faull’s confidence grew and with a seesaw match he secured the win on the 18th 2up, in his first county match, which was a superb achievement.
