Seniors See Off The U18s

The CGU Seniors team exerted their experience over their opponents today as they defeated the County U18 Boys team at Newquay  by a 4-1 margin.

The annual friendly between the CGU Seniors and the CGU U18 boys was played in challenging high winds and occasional rain on a Newquay course presented in fantastic condition given the weather we have endured recently.

The U18’s got off to a flying start with Junior County Captain George Law and Cameron Gurd (Perranporth) leading the way by example and inflicting a convincing 7 and 6 win over Seniors Captain Andy Rowe (Looe) and Rod Frost (St Enodoc). Finishing nearly 45 minutes before the next match Law and Gurd couldn’t have imagined that there’s was to be the only win for the U18’s. But so it transpired to be.

The junior pairings of Tom Stephens (Trevose) & Will Hardwick (Perranporth) and Liam Wilson (Trevose) & Ewan Warren (St Austell) were both beaten 1 up by Paul Clahane (Trevose) with Richard Bunch (West Cornwall) and Rod Handyside with Warwick Holland (both West Cornwall) respectively.

CGU Mens County Captain Charlie Phillips (Newquay)and Trevor Robinson (St Austell) then saw off U18’s Bradley Varcoe (St Austell)and Josh Hodge (Truro) 5 and 4 as did Seniors Trevor Ashton (Trevose) and Malcom Edmunds (West Cornwall) over Josh Chapman (Tehidy Park) and Jack Kevern (West Cornwall) by the same convincing margin.

The Seniors clearly managed the conditions better than their younger opponents showing that experience can sometimes make a real difference. After the team meal both Rowe and Law thanked the opposition for a sporting day played in a great spirit and thanked Newquay for the course and excellent hospitality.
