Cornwall suffered a disappointing home defeat to Devon when they were beaten 9 -6 in their latest Channel League match, which took place at a pristine Launceston GC.
The Duchy team were up against it from the off and found themselves 3 -2 down at lunch after the morning 9 holes of fourballs.
The Cornish morning wins came from David O'Mahony playing with Alan Poole (2&1) and Rod Frost playing with last minute call up Launceston member Phil Bott (3&1). However defeats for Mike Wigley and Duncan Powell (1 down), Mike Marshall and Simon Harper (1 down) and David Goodman and Launceston Secretary Alan Creber (2 down) meant there was a tough ask ahead.
The afternoon singles lead match saw Cornwall's Wigley lose 1 down to Paul Vicary. However when St Enodoc's Frost, who had an excellent day, beat stalwart Graham Ruth and was followed by a 1 up win for Harper , things remained much in the balance. Powell was well beaten (5&4) but a Poole win (4&3) balanced the books again. Devon again got their heads in front when Paul Marels beat O'Mahony and then extended the lead when Creber was beaten 3&1. In between Goodman had a good win over in form Devon Mid Amateur Champion Richard Ward. Meanwhile Bott and Brian Winteridge were having a titanic battle. Bott found himself four down at the turn but staged a magnificent comeback to level the match half way through the back nine. A lengthy birdie putt got Winteridge back in the lead after 15 and he kept this margin through to the end to seal the victory for Devon. When Captain Marshall lost 2 down the margin of the overall victory was extended.
