County Week update Thursday

Matt Lock tees off on the first at Launceston on Thursday

The Royal Cornwall Challenge Cup on Tuesday was won by St Enodoc's Charlie Runnalls with 40 points and in so doing he pipped fellow club member Dave Flew by just the one point. Launceston GC kept up their good showing this week with Keith Wilkinson scoring 37 points and beating Carlyon Bay's Steve Churchill and Radnor's Mike Kent on countback.

Wednesday saw the 36 hole qualifier for the Amateur Championship. Leading qualifier saw Launceston's Richard Jasper score 72 +73 in testing conditions. This earned him the Scratch Cup just ahead of Perranporth's Chris Fleming who lost out on countback. The qualifier also comprises the Handicap Challenge Cup which saw further success for Launceston with Kieran Hancock recording a nett 68 in the morning and a nett 72 in the afternoon for a total of 140.

Today saw the County Amateur Championship move from the last 32 into both the last 16 and last 8 stages.

Today also saw the Western Morning News Challenge Cup won by Carlyon Bay captain Pat Coombe with 84-11 for a nett 73, with Launceston members Malcolm Boscott (79-5=74) and Steve Japes (89-15=74) in second and third places respectively.

There has been ongoing glowing praise for the greenkeeping staff at Launceston for the excellent condition of the course.

Friday will also see the B Team Club Championship commencing in the morning as well as the Founders and Seniors Cup which has some 80 plus competitors taking part.

THe County Championship will be decided on Saturday with a 36 hole final which will be followed by presntation of the week's prizes.
