England Golf Awards 2017 Lord's Cricket Ground, London Thursday 16th March 2017

The Point at Polzeath is an England Golf Awards finalist!

Cornwall's The Point at Polzeath Golf Club is one of two inspirational golf clubs named as the latest finalists for the prestigious 2017 England Golf Awards. The Point and others will be on tenterhooks until the category winners are announced at the Awards Dinner at Lord’s Cricket Ground on Thursday, 16 March 2017. The Point at Polzeath are one of two clubs shortlisted for the GolfMark Club of the Year (sponsored by TaylorMade-Adidas), the other being Essendon Country Club, Hertfordshire.

The two clubs are stand-out examples of clubs which go the extra mile to give the best possible experience to members, visitors and potential new players, with England Golf Chief Executive Nick Pink saying “These finalists are fantastic clubs which put their customers first and help to show that golf is a welcoming sport for all. We look forward to highlighting their great work at the England Golf Awards.”

The Awards will celebrate all that’s excellent about golf in England. They will recognise leading professionals, elite amateurs, top coaches and the stars of club and county golf who do so much to inspire people to play the game.

The club’s popular owners, Jeremy and Eva Davies, pictured below together with Golf Manager Libby Lehan, took over the running of the club in March 2012 and since then have used GolfMark to create a thriving business which bucks industry trends and they hope to double it in size over the next three years. The Point is both a golf club and a leisure hub for the local community and holidaymakers, offering facilities such as a health club and hosting the annual Polzeath Beer Festival, which is combined with get into golf activities. It was the Cornwall GolfMark Club of the Year for 2015. Its been a good year so far with Libby having recently been named in the Cornwall Chamber of Commerce's Under 30 Class of 2016. Libby said "All of us are obviously delighted to have been shortlisted after what has been almost 5 years of hard work. To receive national recognition is very special and we are looking forward to being in London for the awards ceremony next month".

The club, which was operated previously by other owners under the name Roserrow, has been transformed with the course drmatically improved and developed under the watchful eyes of Head Greenkeeper Tom Collings and his team. Resident PGA Professional Phil Brookes is actively engaged with encouraging the membership as well as undertaking initiatives with the local schools and the Get Into Golf sessions.

The clubhouse too has seen changes which continue as we write with a new sports bar under construction as well as extensions to the balcony area and putting green. With first class accommodation and the other on site amenities, the club has seen membership levels markedly increase and as outlined above the hope is this will continue.

As a sign of the overall improvements to the facility, the PGA West Region staged its first Pro-Am there last September and the course hosted a Channel League match as well as the inaugural CGU Seniors Team Championship for 150 players.

CGU President Glyn Rowett said, "The recognition by England Golf of the Point at Polzeath is richly deserved. It is a reflection of the hard work and innovative efforts put in by the club and its owners. We wish them well at the awards ceremony. They have already been successful in being shortlisted and naturally we would be delighted if they were to go the step further."
