Leigh Finishes 17th in Carris Trophy

Cornwall Men’s Amateur Champion George Leigh (Trevose) took part in last week’s England Golf Carris Trophy played at Moor Park GC. The championship which is open to Under 18s attracts a top quality field of English and International players.

The 72-hole stroke play championship was played over four days, with the full field playing 18 holes on each of the first two days. After 36 holes, the leading 60 competitors and ties played a further 18 holes on day 3, followed by a re-draw and a final 18 holes on the fourth day.

Leigh (Trevose) started with a 3 over par 75 and backed this up with a one over 73 to comfortably make the cut which came at plus 6 (144). Round 3 saw a continued improvement as Leigh moved up the field with a level par 72. The final round saw Leigh post another level par round and finish on an overall 4 over par total of 292 in a tie for 17th spot.

The winning score was posted by Yorkshire’s England International Ben Schmidt who is having a stellar year after winning the Men’s equivalent - the Brabazon Trophy - in June. Schmidt finished on a total of 283 and beat Spain’s Rodrigo Martin in a play-off.

Joe Reynard (Trevose) also took part but missed the cut after rounds of 82 and 81 (163).
