CGU President Mike Ellis staged his invitation day at Trevose G&CC yesterday and had a day to remember as he and partner Nick Gammon surged to victory in the pairs betterball event. In all 52 representatives from clubs across the county participated.
Ellis was delighted that two of the field had travelled from the Isles of Scilly to compete. Those two were Dave Stone and David Corners and they played very well in the company of Gammon and Ellis but were eclipsed in the front row seats watching a virtuoso performance from the Trevose MD. Gammon made seven birdies and one eagle as he and Ellis combined for a 48 stableford points total to claim top prize.
Second spot went to Martin Nicholas and Brian Liggat (Lanhydrock) with an excellent 46 points - a winning score on another day - and third were Rob Pople and Tony Zee (Killiow) on 45.
Other leading scores:
43 - Zach Burrough & Steve Harvey (Merlin), Gary Marquand & Gareth Wenmoth (Trethorne), Keith Smallman ) & David Fairbrother (Whitsand Bay Golf Club)
42 - Alan Creber & Paul Hicks (Launceston Golf Club), John Greiner & Paul Hodge (China Fleet Golf Club), Jean Reed & Judith Smith (Bude & North Cornwall Golf Club), Glyn Rowett (St Austell) & Chris Pountney (St Mellion)
It was a good golfing day with light warm winds and the field were treated to a course in very good condition and an excellent meal to follow. Ellis thanked all those who had taken part citing that 22 of the county's 33 affiliated clubs were present. He was pleased that once again a number of ladies had participated. He especially thanked Trevose for their excellent and customary hospitality. He presented prizes to the runners up and third spot before he and Gammon accepted the Foster Mitchell Cups.
