Wiltshire Dominate Cornwall

Despite another spirited performance by the Cornwall Mens Team, a third defeat was the result yesterday as they lost 9-5 to host county Wiltshire on day 4 of the Matchplay Shield at Cumberwell Park GC.

The eight morning singles yielded just one win for the Duchy and that came from SW Week debutant Joe Reynard (above) who beat Simon Futcher by the odd hole in a performance belying his 17 years. Rob MacGregor and Sandy Kirton both halved their singles matches. The lunchtime score was 6-2 in favour of Wiltshire. Cornwall therefore needed 3 wins and a half from the four foursomes.

In the early afternoon stages that seemed possible but as the afternoon wore on Wiltshire matched the Cornish and as per the morning the Duchy could only gain one win. Partenered for the first time Joe Cruse and Reynard won their encounter with Tom Stagg and Joe Retford one up. MacGregor playing with Conor Wilson gained a half as did Richard Jasper playing with Josh Greenaway.

Today is the last of the matchplay games and Cornwall face Dorset. Devon play Gloucestershire and Wiltshire will play Somerset in what is likely to be the matchplay decider.

Somerset head the table with 4 wins from 4, with Wiltshire 2nd (3 from 4) and Gloucestershire 3rd (3 from 4). Cornwall lie 4th above Devon (5th) and Dorset (6th).
