Tehidy Dedicate President's Trophy Win to Phil Andrew

Tehidy Park GC’s 9 man President’s Trophy team - pictured above - claimed their first overall win in the competition as they defeated West Cornwall 6.5 - 2.5 at Bude & N Cornwall GC yesterday in this year’s delayed final. At the prize giving the team dedicated the win in memory of their Club President Phil Andrew who sadly passed away in January. In his speech acting team Captain Julian Ridge paid tribute to Andrew who he said would have been so pleased at the team’s win.

The two teams were treated to a rare sunny day with little wind and a clear blue sky and a course presented in excellent condition by the host club.

In the format which sees three category 1, three category 2 and three category 3 golfers playing singles match-play off handicap, Tehidy Park eased themselves into a comfortable position as their middle order three all claimed wins  ‘out in the country’.

Simon O’Mahony beat Ben Easterling 7&6, Graham Elliott beat Dave Bowden 6&5 and young Josh Chapman took care of Ian Hodge in a 5&4 win. Chapman is pictured below dispatching his ball into the clear blue skies over Bude.

When Darren Vincent, maintaining a 100% record during the campaign, the first player out also won 5&3 against Steve Taylor his team were poised for the win which duly followed when Joe Venn calmly stroked home a putt from 5 feet to claim a 3&2 win and more importantly an all-important fifth point in his match against Ollie Naylor.

For Tehidy Simon Inwards halved with Andre Otto and with the result declared a couple of agreed halves followed for Alex Hinds and Andrew Clotworthy against Rod Handyside and Richard Bunch respectively.

All those present were first welcomed by Bude Captain Dave Simmons. Both Captains Ridge and for West Cornwall Richard Glasson, thanked Bude & N Cornwall GC for the condition of the course, the hospitality and the catering as well as thanking the Cornwall Golf Union for staging the winter knockout programme. Before presenting the prizes CGU President Mike Ellis (pictured above presenting the elegant President's Trophy to Julian Ridge) especially thanked Bude for their first class help and cooperation following the disruption caused to staging the finals by the mid March snowfall. He also referred the audience to the fact some 850 plus golfers had taken part in the four winter knockout competitions.
