Happy Christmas Cornwall - One and All!

The CGU Secretary is ashamed to admit he has put nothing on the website for almost a whole month! Does he have any excuses - not really although the end of the year is always a busy time as we try to move seamlessly into another 12 months of golf in Cornwall.

President Glyn Rowett, the Officers and Executive Committee of the Cornwall Golf Union would like to wish you and your families a very Happy and Joyful Christmas and a most successful New Year in 2018 and at the same time express their thanks to all of our Clubs and affiliated members for their fantastic support across the past year. The level of support is truly appreciated.

A lot has taken place this year and there are plans for more to happen across the coming year too.

Those able to attend the recent General Meeting and Annual Dinner will have heard of the plan to create an overarching group, made up of representatives from the Cornwall Ladies County Golf Association and the CGU, together with England Golf and representatives of clubs in Cornwall, to develop Cornwall Golf and all matters golf in the Duchy. This has been agreed in principle by both Association and Union and now we need to drive this forward and create firm proposals to be agreed by the membership. All of this with the aim of benefitting those connected to golf in Cornwall and to increasingly market the incredible facilities we have within our great county.

The General Meeting also heard from Neil Ivamy, Course Manager at Trevose G&CC in a short talk about the legislative removal of licences in respect of a number of hitherto everyday chemicals. The impact of these removals is yet to be fully felt but professional opinion suggests there will be a detrimental effect on courses with an inability to treat common pests and ground conditions. We have all been guilty of criticising course conditions but this was a gentle and salutary reminder the criticisms can be uninformed and unjustified.

We are continually grateful to those who have provided sponsorship to the CGU and express our deep appreciation to Brittany Ferries Golf, Francis Clark Financial Planning Ltd and Ocean BMW all of whom have been a great and generous support to us. Again at the General Meeting the audience heard from Graham Ruth (Brittany Ferries Golf Desk & Golf Tee Time Service) as to what he and they can assist clubs with. I know that a number of you have already spoken with Graham since the meeting. Minutes of the General Meeting will be published in due course.

The CGU Dinner at Newquay was another good evening celebrating 2017. Radnor Golf Club picked up the Summer Handicap League Trophy, Rob MacGregor was Cornwall’s Channel League Player of the Year, Joe Reynard became Junior Player of the Year and County Champion Conor Wilson was crowned Player of the Year. Well done to all of them. We were delighted to have so many of the regional Presidents with us as well as the Immediate Past President England Golf, Marian Rae. Former England Test cricketer and Chairman of Selectors Geoff Miller rounded off the evening perfectly with his highly amusing animated delivery of his time in and overseeing the England team.

We have a new County Captain in Ian Veale who replaces David Kneebone. For those who do know Ian - and for those who do not - we will be producing a biography early in the New Year. Setting his golfing achievements on paper will take some time! Ian’s Vice Captain will be Charlie Phillips and the pair will have charge of the county team for the next two years. Naturally we all wish Ian and Charlie well in their respective roles.
