Joe becomes New Junior County Captain

Cornwall Men's team member Joe Reynard (Trevose G&CC)- above with Junior Section President Alan Lund - was installed as the CGU Junior County Captain at last night's Annual General Meeting of the Junior Section hosted by Newquay GC. Reynard spoke of the honour it was for him to become Captain and how much he was looking forward to the role and to playing a part in future success for the Duchy's boys teams. Reynard, now 16 years old,  has developed into an excellent golfer and since first featuring in county junior competitions as a 28 handicapper in 2012 has worked incredibly hard at his game with the reward reflected in his current plus 0.6 status. Team Managers at the meeting last night spoke of Joe's excellent captaincy of the U16 team this season which saw them claim the inter county Ben Enoch Trophy for the first time in 5 years. U16 Manager Gary Andrew (Truro) commended Joe for the team spirit and determination he had created in the team. In his speech to the meeting Joe said 2017 had been a good year for him personally and he had seen an excellent spirit amongst the team. He alluded to the home advantage in the coming year with both the Four Counties and SW Boys events being staged in Cornwall. He said he could not wait to get started and concluded in bouyant mood saying 'bring on 2018'.

Reynard replaces Bradley Barnes (West Cornwall) as he moves out of junior golf into the next stage. Barnes made reference to how much he had enjoyed the role and wished Joe well. Barnes thanked County Men's Captain David Kneebone and Vice Ian Veale for the encouragement they had given him across the year and also paid tribute to the work carried out on behalf of the juniors by Alan Lund and CGU Secretary Chris Pountney. U18 Manager Andy Mortimore (Truro) paid tribute to the captaincy of Barnes across the season. Junior President Lund thanked Bradley for his excellent captaincy and  presented him with a memento recognising the role.

In other business conducted at the meeting Alan Lund was formally elected to continue in the role of Junior President with Simon Ferguson-Smith (St Austell) as Vice President. There will be two new Junior Committee members on the committee after both Andrew Kevern (West Cornwall) and Derek Law (Perranporth) were elected. They replace the retiring committee members Andy Mortimore and Simon Wood.

Junior President Lund reported to the meeting welcoming all those present including County President Glyn Rowett and Newquay GC Vice Captain Keith Barker. He thanked retiring managers Mortimore and Wood for their long term work with the junior teams and also thanked Peter Hodge (Truro) for his work with the various Junior Orders of Merit. He commended Truro juniors who had won all bar one of the main Junior competitions in 2017.

All 2017 Team Managers presented reports to the meeting before the 2018 manager positions were announced. Gary Andrew will continue with the U16 team but additionally will also have responsibility for the U18s whilst Matt Tucknott (West Cornwall) will look after the U14s. Dave Watson (St Austell) will remain in charge of the popular and very successful U12s Mini Tour.

Tucknott presented a report on Junior Development in the county and the plans for the winter Academy programme.

Formal decision was taken to reduce the Junior Autumn Meeting traditionally held at Mullion GC to an 18 hole event with emphasis placed on inclusion of the girls and U12s group. Also subject to change is the number of events included in the 2018 Junior Order of Merit. The Junior Committee would resolve matters at its first meeting in the New Year. Other matters to be discussed include the imminent CONGU changes with increased handicap categories and the conditions relating to the Bolitho and Kernow Cup competitions.

The meeting heard of increased numbers of juniors at a number of clubs including Bude & N Cornwall, The Point at Polzeath and St Enodoc and their hope of entering CGU Junior Competitions in the coming year.

In closing the meeting CGU County President Glyn Rowett paid tribute to the work of the Junior Section and its officers and volunteers. He requested that those present thank their clubs for the support given not only to junior golf but also to the County Union as a whole.
