Perranporth Claim Maiden Maxam Win

Perranporth GC yesterday claimed their first ever win in the Cornwall Golf Union’s Maxam Cup competition staged in great golfing conditions at a beautifully presented St Austell GC.

With 15 of the county’s clubs competing the Perranporth team of 6 - pictured above - playing foursomes medal in 3 pairs combined for a 280 total for a 7 shot win over second placed Truro.

It was Truro who had led after the morning round with a 135 total as their two counting scores came from Cameron Gurd and Mark Bracey (67) and Paul Suddes and Mark Wilson (68). At the halfway point Perranporth were 6 shots behind Truro on 141 with their score made up of the days lowest round a 66 from Cornwall County Champion Conor Wilson playing with Sandy Kirton and a 75 from Chris Llewelyn and Simon Knowles.

Unfortunately for Truro their afternoon did not go as well as they had hoped as Gurd & Bracey shot a 74 and Wilson and Suddes a 78. Truro’s third pairing of Jamie Crocker & Jake Finn returned non counting scores of 75 and 79.

Perranporth though surged to victory with the whole team playing a part as Wilson & Kirton returned 68 and George Law and Tom Benney a 71. Llewelyn and Knowles slipped to a non counting 84 but had done their bit for the team in the morning.

Conor Wilson and Sandy Kirton claimed the prize for best individual pair on the day with their combined total of 134 (-4) seven shots better than Gurd and Bracey in the runners up spot on 141 (+3).

2016 winners Tehidy Park had a costly morning with a 148 total which saw them in 6th spot at the halfway mark. They rallied in the afternoon though for a 143 score and a total of 291 for 3rd place overall. (Rob MacGregor & Ian Veale 74 + 70 = 144, Matt Lock & James Barnard 74 + 73 = 147, Peter & Richard Simmons 75 + 77 = 152)

4th Place was claimed by St Enodoc in a hard fought 293 and 5th were Newquay a further shot back on294.  Host club St Austell finished 6th on 300. For them Gary Johns and Nigel Tucker scored an excellent morning 69.

St Austell GC Captain Gary Warren welcomed all the competitors to the club before CGU President Glyn Rowett expressed the thanks of the CGU to the hosts and presented the prizes.
