U14s and U16s Blown Off Course at Thurlestone

Both Cornwall's U14 and U16 teams suffered defeats yesterday in their respective Jack Roberts League and Ben Enoch Trophy matches. Taking on Devon at a very windy Thurlestone GC the elements got the better of both teams.

The eight strong county U16 team travelled to Thurlestone GC, south Devon on Friday to begin their Ben Enoch League campaign. With no foursome matches this year and only eight singles matches at junior level, the Cornwall team arrived (after a long journey due to heavy summer traffic) to a course none of the team had played before. Greeting them upon arrival, was a strong south westerly gale blowing right into Bigbury Bay, coupled with a warning from the hosts about the thick rough which made conditions very tough all round.

After a team talk from manager Andrew Kevern focussing on club selection and ball flight control, the U16s took to the course knowing that they had to work hard to control their golf ball and keep it out of the thick punishing rough.

In the opening match, West Cornwall's Jack Kevern had to work hard to keep pace with his opponent before eventually succumbing to a 3&1 defeat.

Falmouth's Archie Fox was also defeated 5&3. With two points on the board, Devon looked to assert their control over the remaining matches on the course. Thomas Miller (Newquay) fresh from his appearnce in England Golf's Reid Trophy and Hugo Watson (Carlyon Bay) both lost their matches on the 15th hole, while debutant, James Tucknott (West Cornwall) and regular, Harry Richards (Carlyon Bay), were both unfortunate to lose their matches on the final hole after sterling displays.

Cornwall's only wins came from Captain, Isaac D'Bue and Harry Drewett (both Falmouth) who managed their games well to win their matches on the 18th green. Harry's win was even more sweet after fighting back from 3 down with 5 to play.

Overall, a well earned 6 - 2 victory for the home team, although the Cornwall boys should be proud of their efforts in such tough conditions. Cornwall left Thurlestone having lost 12 balls between them in the very punishing rough.
