U18s Win Roy Greenaway Trophy

Cornwall's winning U18 Team (L to R); Ryan Gregory, Alec Nile, Connor Vanstone, Isaac D'Bue, Jack Kevern, Cameron Gurd, Will Hardwick and Matt Lamb

On a beautifully sunny day and well presented Mendip Spring golf course Cornwall U18’s faced a Somerset side relishing home advantage. But Cornwall’s young guns were having none of it and emerged the victors in a tight and exciting finish lifting the Greenaway Trophy for the first time in several years.

Cornwall made four changes from the win against Devon the previous week with three of it’s more experienced players, including Captain Tom Stephens, competing in the South of England Boys Championships.

Played in lowest handicap order Cornwall’s Matt Lamb (Tehidy) was first out against a strong Freddie Turnell who eventually won 2+1 after a closely fought encounter. Jack Kevern (West Cornwall) then came in with a strong 6+4 win over Somerset’s Kyle Miller.

The match then went back and forth with Cameron Gurd (Perranporth) and Connor Vanstone (Bude) both losing 2 down to Josh Owen and Dylan John respectively.  But Cornwall bounced back again with Alec Nile (Carlyon Bay) 3+2, Isaac D’Bue (Falmouth) 2+1 and Will Hardwick (Perranporth) 4+2 all winning to put Cornwall in the lead at 4-3. Then last player out, Ryan Gregory (St. Mellion), then calmly rolled in a 6 foot put on the 17th to ensure a half and securing the overall win for Cornwall.

All members of the team showed passion and commitment at representing their County and a great team performance got Cornwall over the line. Our grateful thanks to Mendip Spring and it’s members who, once again, welcomed Cornwall to their club, were excellent hosts and provided a great course to compete on.
