CGU Winter Knockouts 2020-21 to be Deferred

CGU President Andrew Clotworthy has this evening issued a statement in relation to the Winter Knockout programme.

The statement reads as follows:

The Cornwall Golf Union has been very successful in running a pretty full programme of events despite the restrictions imposed on us all by the Covid-19 pandemic.

However, we now move on to the winter and current trends with the virus which we cannot ignore.

Following a Championship Committee meeting last night the decision has been reached to defer all the Winter Knockout Competitions until the beginning of January 2021, when the situation will be reviewed.

The key points driving the decision are:

  • Much tighter Government restrictions with ‘the Rule of Six’
  • The very realistic prospect of local lockdowns
  • Recognition of the ‘R’ Rate, which is specifically used to highlight the escalation in Covid cases, and we must play our part in mitigating where possible
  • Bad weather – throughout the summer events have been made much easier with good weather. This of course will not be the case with winter and the absence of access to locker rooms, changing and shower facilities will cause problems
  • It is also fair to assume that some clubs may actually be locked down as has already been the case throughout the country.

As I made clear in March at the beginning of the pandemic, we are all about playing as much golf as possible safely. It is our full intention to play these competitions, should restrictions permit, and a further announcement will be made at the beginning of January.
