Alton Leads Carlyon Bay Success

Carlyon Bay's course provided a good test - after the fog had lifted!

Carlyon Bay golfers almost swept the board yesterday as the popular CGU Seniors Championship stableford competition took place involving a field of 66 players.

Why is the competition popular? Because it offers a chance to seniors across 5 different age bands the chance to win prizes. With golf acknowledged as a health benefit for all,  the oldest player in the field at 81 proved the point handsomely. Age category prizes were on offer in the 5 bands: 55-59, 60-64, 65-69, 70-74 and 75 years plus.

Competition day dawned with the course shrouded in coastal fog and low cloud and whilst the start was delayed somewhat visibility remained a thorn in the organisers sides. One suspension of play was necessary and during this, abandonment of the competition was a consideration. Conditions did though improve and a resumption of play was possible.

Overall Stableford winner on the day was the host clubs John Alton who despite not scoring at the first hole returned an excellent 42 points. This best total of the day saw him claim the 60-64 bracket win over fellow member Phil Barratt (37) with Len Flower (Bowood Park) third on 32.

In the youthful 55-59 band another Carlyon Bay member Mark Royle claimed the winners honours on 38 points. Second in this category was Steve Arthur (Porthpean, 36 points) and third went to another Carlyon Bayer in Mike Krasny on 35.

Porthpean's Mike Hackett claimed top spot in the 65-69 class with 35 points from the Bay pair of Danny Couch, second on 34 and Mike Allen third on 32.

The host club had another winner in the 70-74 bracket as Les McGirl topped things with 35 points, just pipping his clubmate Kelvyn Nancarrow on 34. Ian Jeffery (Trevose) was third on 33.

In the most senior category (75 plus) Ross Oliver (Trevose) registered a 34 point total to top the group with Robin Milan (Carlyon Bay) runner up on 31.

With no formal presentation taking place prize vouchers and trophies will be distributed in due course.
