Fox and Cuffin Win Lord Lieutenant's Trophy

The Falmouth GC pairing of senior David Cuffin and junior Archie Fox came out on top of the pile at Carlyon Bay yesterday. In the second county competition staged by the Cornwall Golf Union since lockdown restrictions were eased, the pair returned a betterball stableford total of 44 points to claim a one point victory over another senior/junior pairing in Tony Friday and James Tucknott from Radnor. A total of 112 players competed in another example of the demand for competitive golf after a period of lay-off. The Lord Lieutenants Trophy competition has been staged as a charity event for a number of years now and continues to support St John Ambulance (Cornwall). The charity will receive a further healthy four figure sum from the CGU as a result.

Fox produced three birdies and the pair had just the one hole where a gross bogey gave them only the one point. Five pars for Fox all merited 3 points whilst three pars for Cuffin did the same. Cuffins third par came at the par 3 last  hole and the extra point there saw them over the line.

Tucknott and Friday recorded 11 gross pars and one birdie in their 43 point haul but they were left ruing two par 4 holes. The fourteenth where they did not score and the seventeenth where a double gave them just the one point.

Third place on 42 points went to the host club pairing of Nick and Charles Letcher who finished one point ahead of a further 8 pairs on 41.

The only eagle of the day came from Mullion's Wilf Hutchinson who gained his pairing 5 points at the par 5 10th.

In line with the ongoing restrictions there was no trophy presentation made to the winners, although this will be arranged at a later date. The top three pairs will receive vouchers.

The next week sees further CGU competitions taking place. The Seniors County Championship takes place over two days - again at Carlyon Bay - with 39 participating in the new two day strokeplay on Wednesday 5th and Thursday 6th August. A further 65 seniors will play an 18 hole stableford on the Thursday. Then on Sunday 9th August the CGU Maxam Cup takes place at nearby St Austell GC when 16 club teams of 6 will compete.
