CGU Fund Raiser Hailed a Great Success

Saturday 21st September saw the staging of a Team Stableford Am-Am at Tehidy Park Golf Club in which a total of 80 competed with the aim of raising funds for the Duchy Mens Team.

20 teams of 3 had entered and each team ultimately received a fourth player made up of members of County Captain Ian Veale’s squad. More on that in a moment.

CGU Vice President Andrew Clotworthy welcomed those present to Tehidy Park and outlined that monies raised on the day would be used to better prepare the Men’s team for South WestWeek 2020 which will take place at Burnham & Berrow GC, Somerset next June. He thanked Veale and Vice Captain Charlie Phillips for all the work they had put in ahead of this event. He thanked all those supporting the event and wished everyone the best for the day.

First off all those present were treated to a brunch prepared in their customary wholesome fashion by the TPGC Caterers and then the respective teams were invited to bid for their fourth team member.

This auction, conducted by Phillips, caused considerable amusement with a lot of audience interaction and banter filling the air in a crowded clubhouse. Not only were County First team members allocated to teams but also Newquay based PGA Professional Chris Gill and Seniors Tour Professional Mike Reynard.

Once the final teams were complete it was time to set foot on the course in the 2 scores to count stableford which commenced with a shotgun start format. Despite the fact there were 20 teams on the well prepared course some 4 hours later the clubhouse was again full as all those present enjoyed another meal together and some liquid refreshment before a further auction of donated items took place. These included a surfboard signed by Britain’s highly ranked Newquay based surfer Luke Dillon. Once again the clubhouse atmosphere was electric as Charlie Phillips presided.

The day’s prizewinners were then announced and invited to select their rewards from amongst waterproofs, wedges, shoes balls and headcovers.
