Cornwall rounded off their 2014 Channel League season with a resounding 12 - 3 away win against Devon over the West course at a sun drenched Saunton yesterday.
Despite taking a 3 - 2 lead into lunch after the morning foursomes there was no indication of the overall victory margin and when Cornwall won 9 of the 10 available singles Devon were forced to concede they had been comprehensively routed.
The foursomes saw wins for the Cornish from Conor Wilson playing with Matt Richards (3&2), Ian Veale with Harry Hall (1 up) and Josh Greenaway with Adam Curtis (4&3). The defeats were inflicted on for Tom Fox and Joe Cruse (1 down)and Jon Hancock and Jack Mewton (5&4).
From the outset of the singles, however, Cornwall took the initiative. Fox gained the biggest of the victories with a 6&5 win over Dan Rosevear and was 6 under par in doing so. Hall beat home club member and English Amateur quarter finalist Jake Burnage 2&1. Wilson delivered a 3&2 victory over Ollie Tanton followed by Richards beating Tom Trobridge 5&4. With Cornwall firmly in the driving seat further wins from Cruse (3&2 over James Smith), Greenaway (3&2 over Ryan Acres), Curtis (4&3 over Sam Dunn), Veale (2&1 over Lee Marels) and Mewton (2&1 over James Diamond) nailed a resounding win. The remaining single went the way of Devon as Harry Konig beat Hancock 2&1.
As reigning Channel League Champions Cornwall’s previous weekend halved match at home to Wiltshire had proved costly but the margin of the win over Devon should see the Duchy secure this year’s runner’s up spot and provides some good momentum as the county move towards the English County Finals taking place at Royal North Devon GC 26th-28th September when they will face Yorkshire, Warwickshire and Surrey.
